Daisy picked up the telephone and tried to get through to her client again.
デイジーは受話器をとりあげ、もう一度その依頼者に電話をかけてみることにしました。
Deijii wa juwaki wo toriage, moh-ichido sono-iraisha ni
dennwa wo kakete-miru kotoni shimashita.
Her client, a certain Frank Baccini, who had a warehouse of electrical goods,
had not paid for her two days' work.
依頼者はフランク・バッキーニと名乗る人で、電気製品の倉庫を所有していますが、
デイジーの二日間の仕事の報酬をまだ払っていませんでした。
Irai-sha wa Furanku Bakkiini to nanoru hitode, dennki-seihin
no sohko wo sho
yuh shite-imasu-ga, Deijii no futsuka-kan no shigoto no houshuh wo mada hara

Daisy had managed to discover where Mr. Baccini's dishonest partner was now
living and was anxiously expecting her cheque.

Daisy was beginning to think that her client was dishonest too.

A very bored "Hello, can I help you?" was the reply at the other
end.

It was a young woman's voice, Frank Baccini's secretary.
それは若い女性の声で、フランク・バッキーニの秘書でした。

"I'd like to speak to Mr. Baccini, please."
「バッキーニさんとお話ししたいのですが。」
"Bakkiini-san to ohanashi shitai-no-desuga."
"Sorry, Mr. Baccini is out of town."
「すみません。バッキーニは外出しております。」
"Sumimasen. Bakkiini wa gaishutu shite-orimasu."
"But when is he coming back?" insisted Daisy.
「何時頃お戻りになりますか。」とデイジーは食い下がりました。
"Itsu-goro o-modori-ni narimasu-ka." to Deijii wa
kuisagari mashita.
"I'm afraid I don't know."
「わかりません。」
"Wakarimasen."
"Will you tell him Daisy Hamilton telephoned and would like to talk to
him urgently."
「では、至急にお話ししたい件があると言ってデイジー・ハミルトンから電話があっ
たことをお伝え頂けますか。」
"Dewa, shikyuh-ni ohanashi shitai-ken ga aru-to itte
Deijii Hamiruton kara denwa ga atta koto wo o-tsutae itadake-masuka."
"Well - yes, I suppose so," was the completely unconcerned reply.
「ええ、まあ、」と、まったく関心のないような返事でした。
"Eh, mah." to, mattaku kanshin no nai-yohna henji
deshita.
This was the tenth telephone conversation Daisy had had in two weeks with
this young woman, but Frank Baccini hadn't got in touch with her yet.
この2週間のうちにデイジーがこの若い女性と電話で話すのは、これで10回目ですが
、フランク・バッキーニからはまだ連絡がありません。
Kono ni-shuhkan no uchi-ni Deijii ga kono wakai josei to
denwa de hanasu-nowa, korede jukkai-me desuga, Furanku Bakkiini kara-wa mada renraku ga arimasen.
Daisy was furious and decided to go to Mr. Baccini's warehouse to see if he
was there.

"I've telephoned many times - my name is Daisy Hamilton."

"Really? Who did you want to speak to?" asked the young woman
without even glancing at Daisy.
「そうなんですか。誰とお話ししたのんですか」と、その若い女性はデイジーを見る
こともせずにたずねました。
"Soh-nandesuka. Dareto ohanashi shitai-no desuka?"

She was becoming even more aggressive.
デイジーはますます強く出るようになっていました。
Deijii wa masu-masu tsuyoku-deru youni natte-imashita.
"I'm afraid he's not here," said the secretary in her usual
monotonous way a
nd went on reading her magazine.
「彼は居ません」と、秘書はいつもの単調な口調で言って、また雑誌を読み始めました。
"Kare-wa imasen." to, hisho wa itumono tancho-na
kucho de itte, mata zasshi
wo yomi-hajime-mashita.
Daisy shouted "Enough is enough!" and banged the door closed.
「もう結構です!」とデイジーは大きな声で言って、バタンとドアを閉めました。
"Moh-kekkoh-desu!" to Deijii wa ookina koe-de itte,
batan-to doa wo shime-ma
shita.
Daisy felt rather depressed.
デイジーはがっかりしていました。
Deijii wa gakkari shite imashita.
"I know what I'll do," she thought, "I'll stop off at Luigi's
for a nice ban
ana split."
「さて、こんなときは、ルイギの店に立ち寄って素敵なバナナスプリットでも頂きま
しょう。」とデイジーは考えました。
"Sate, kon-na toki-wa, Ruigi no mise-ni tachiyotte
sutekina banana sutorippu

Daisy liked sitting in Ruigi's ice-cream parlour and having a little chat
with the owner, a positive-thinking Italian.

As Daisy walked up the stairs to her office she felt a little less sore about
human beings.

these?" pointing to two large boxes on the landing.
「すみません。デイジー・ハミルトンさんですか。これは何処へ置きましょうか。」
と、大きな箱を2つに指差して言いました。
"Sumimasen. Deijii Hamiruton san desuka? Koreha doko-e
oki-mashoh-ka?" to, o
okina hako-wo futatu yubi-sashi-te iimashita.
"Yes, I am Daisy Hamilton but what have you got there - what's in those
boxes?"
「はい、デイジー・ハミルトンですが、何を持って来たのですか。箱の中は何ですか。」
"Hai, Deijii Hamiruton desuga, nani wo
motte-kita-no-desuka?. Hako-no naka w
a nan-desuka?."
"The big one is a fridge and the smaller one is a cappuccino-making
machine.
You've chosen well, you know, these are the best makes around."
「大きい方は冷蔵庫で小さい方はカプチーノを作る機械です。利口な品選びですね。
両方とも、ここらで手にはいる最高の品物ですよ。」
"Ookii-hoh wa reizohko de chiisai-hoh wa kapuchihno wo
tsukuru kikai desu. R
ikoh-na shina-erabi desu-ne. Ryouhoh tomo, kokorade teni-hairu saikoh no shi
na-mono desu-yo."
"I haven't ordered either of these," exclaimed Daisy.
「どちらも注文はしていませんよ。」とデイジーは強く言いました。
"Dochiramo chuhmon wa shite-imasen-yo." to Deijii

"But it's your name on the delivery note!" insisted the workman.
「でも、配達伝票にあなたの名前が書いてあります」と作業員は主張しました。
"Demo, haitatsu-denpyoh ni anata-no namae ga
kaite-arimasu." to sagyoh-in wa
shuchoh shimashita.
"It's all paid for - just tell me where to put them."
「全部、代金は支払済みになってます。置く場所だけ教えて下さい。」
"Zenbu, daikin wa shiharai-zumi ni natte-masu. Oku basho
dake oshiete kudasai."
Daisy was just about to refuse the goods when she saw Frank Baccini coming in
the door, too.
デイジーが品物の受取を拒否しようとしていたとき、フランク・バッキーニが入って
来ました。
Deijii ga shinamono no uketori wo kyohi-shiyoh to
shite-ita-toki, Furanku Ba

"Miss Hamilton. I'm very sorry I haven't been in touch.

ないのに気付いていました、それと、、、このカプチーノ・メーカーはちょっとした
優れ物ですよ。

Frank Baccini saw Daisy was astonished and added:

Daisy recovered herself, "Well, no, she didn't - but that's quite all
right
Mr. Baccini!"
