Yövartio |
Night Watch |
Tuona
kevätaamuna Daisy oli noussut aikaisin, koska hänellä oli työtehtävä
läheisessä kaupungissa. |
Daisy had got up early that
spring morning because she was working on a case in the nearby town. |
Varttia vaille kahdeksan hän
saapui toimistolleen kädessään paperipussi, jossa oli tuoreita
kermaleivoksia. Hän halusi kuollakseen kupillisen kahvia. |
She arrived at her office
with a paper bag in her hand containing fresh cream buns at a quarter to
eight and was dying for a cup of coffee. |
Kun hän pani avaimen
lukkoon, naisen ääni sanoi “ovi on auki, Daisy”. |
As she put the key in the
lock, a woman’s voice called out, "It’s open, Daisy." |
Se oli Pam, siivooja. |
It was Pam, the cleaner. |
“Maistuisiko
itkenyt. |
"How about some breakfast,
Pam?" said Daisy with a smile and then noticed Pam had obviously been
crying. |
“Pam,
mitä on tapahtunut? |
"Pam,
whatever has happened? |
Tule tänne istumaan ja syö
aamupalaa kanssani. |
Come on sit down and have
some breakfast with me. |
Kerro
minulle mikä mieltäsi painaa.” |
Please tell me what’s bothering you.” |
Pam oli ahkerasti
työtätekevä nainen, jolla oli kaksi lasta kasvatettavanaan. |
Pam was a hard-working woman
with two children to bring up. |
Hän siivosi koko
rakennuksen, joka käsitti seitsämän toimistoa. |
She did the cleaning for the
whole building which meant seven offices. |
“Jim
on taas ollut niskassani lapsista. |
"Jim has been on to me again
about the children. |
Hänellä ei ole laillista
oikeutta tavata heitä, eikä hän myöskään voisi vähempää välittää heistä,
ei ole koskaan välittänyt.” |
You know he has no legal
right to see them and he really couldn’t care less about them, and never
has." |
“Keitetään
kupilliset kahvia.” |
"Let’s put the kettle on." |
Daisy
alkoi valmistaa pikakahvia ja tarjosi Pamille leivoksen. |
Daisy began preparing the
instant coffee and offered Pam a bun, |
“No
niin, aloita ihan alusta.” |
"Now, why don’t you start
from the beginning?" |
Pam
näytti todella vaivaantuneelta ja jatkoi: |
Pam looked extremely
troubled and went on: |
“Kun
me erosimme, hän ei edes pyytänyt tavata lapsiaan. |
"You see, when we got
divorced he didn’t even ask to see his children. |
Now he’s got no money, he’s
trying to torture me into giving him some with the threat that otherwise
he’ll get the children away from me." |
“En
"I don’t think he can do
that easily, Pam," Daisy reasoned. |
Pam otti vastaan toisen
leivoksen. |
Pam
accepted another bun. |
"No Daisy, not easily, but
he’s very vindictive and he’s threatened to make my life a hell." |
“No,
"Well, we’ll just have to
wait and see. |
Look, if he gets violent all
you have to do is call the police." |
“Minä
tunnen Jimin, jos en anna hänelle rahaa niin hän toteuttaa uhkauksensa.” |
"I know Jim, if I don’t give
him money he’ll be as good as his word." |
Kolme päivää myöhemmin
Daisyn puhelin soi. |
Three days later Daisy got a
telephone call. |
“Daisy,
Pam täällä. Olen tulossa hulluksi. |
"Daisy, it’s Pam. I’m going
round the bend. |
Jim’s been coming round to
my house every night after the pubs close trying to see through my
bedroom window and making strange noises. |
He’s trying to get on my
nerves so that I’ll give in and hand over all the money he asks for. |
En ole nukkunut kolmeen
päivään.” |
I haven’t slept for three
days." |
“Oletko
kertonut poliisille tästä?” |
" Have you informed the
police about it?" |
“Jim
"Jim telephoned me just now
and said that if I call the police in, he’ll tell them I’m imagining
things and hysterical and mentally ill and shouldn’t have his children
in my custody. |
Mitä minä teen, Daisy? Olen
epätoivoinen.” |
What am I going to do Daisy? I feel
desperate." |
”Okei
Pam, kerro minulle osoitteesi ja katson, mitä voin tehdä” |
"All right Pam, tell me your
address and I’ll see what I can do." |
Daisy meni Trendiin,
paikalliseen tv-, radio- ja tietokoneliikkeeseen ja pyysi saada puhua
kaupan omistajan herra Ranjeen kanssa. |
Daisy went round to Trends, her local
television, radio and computer shop, and asked to speak to Mr. Ranjee,
the owner of the shop. |
“Herra
Ranjee, luuletko että voisit lainata minulle videokameran pariksi
päiväksi?” |
"Mr. Ranjee, do you think
you could lend me a camcorder for a couple of days?" |
Daisy
oli saanut kiinni myymälävarkaan muutama kuukausi aiemmin |
Daisy had found the thief
who was stealing from the shop a few months’ ago |
and Mr. Ranjee had always
said that if ever she needed something, please to come and ask for it. |
“Tottakai,
neiti Hamilton.Tarvitset siis sellaisen, jolla voi kuvata pimeässä. |
"Of course, Miss Hamilton.
You say you want one that works in the dark. |
Hmm – ota tämä. Osaatko
käyttää sitä? Anna kun näytän. |
Mm - take this. Do you know
how to use it? Let me show you." |
Herra Ranjee käytti
seuraavat puoli tuntia opettaen Daisylle joitain videokameran
perusominaisuuksia. |
Mr. Ranjee spent the next
half hour teaching Daisy some elementary camcorder tricks. |
Daisy päätti mennä käymään
Pamin luona kymmenen maissa illalla aseistautuneena videokameralla ja
sen sateenkestävällä suojuksella. |
Daisy decided to go around
to Pam’s house at about ten that evening armed with the camcorder and
its rain-proof covering. |
Hänellä oli myös pilli ja
Mars-patukka taskussaan ajankuluksi. |
She also had a whistle in
her pocket and a Mars bar to while away the time. |
“Voi
ei, alkaa sataa,” Daisy huudahti itsekseen. |
"Oh no! It’s beginning to
rain," Daisy exclaimed to herself. |
Joka kerta kun hänellä oli
yökeikka, satoi aina vettä. |
Whenever she had a job on at
night it invariably rained. |
Onneksi tällä kertaa hänellä
oli muovinen sadetakki ja huppu mukanaan. |
Fortunately, this time, she
had brought a plastic mac and hood with her. |
Siihen
aikaan yöstä ei näkynyt paljoa ihmisiä. |
At that time of night there
were few people around. |
puutarhan puolella. |
Pam had explained that she
lived in an old cottage, and that her bedroom was round the back facing
the garden. |
Kun Daisy saapui paikalle,
hän kiersi mökin taakse, kiipesi matalan aidan yli |
When Daisy arrived, she went
to the back of the cottage, climbed over the low fence |
ja huomasi, että puutarhan
perällä oli ränsistynyt vaja. |
and saw there was a
tumble-down tool shed at the bottom of the garden. |
“Tuonne
minä piiloudun ja odottelen sitä hirviötä. |
"That’s where I’ll hide and
wait for that monster. |
Kuinka hän kehtaakaan
yrittää satuttaa Pamia,” Daisy ajatteli. |
How dare he try to hurt dear
Pam," thought Daisy. |
Kun Hän oli pässyt sisään
vajaan, Daisy kuuli kukkaruukun tai vastaavan putoavan maahan
ulkopuolella |
Once inside the shed Daisy
heard something like a flower-pot fall to the ground outside |
and crouched down so that
she couldn’t be seen through the small dirty window. |
Puutarha oli selvästi
kissojen kokoontumispaikka, sillä hän kuuli maukunaa. |
Apparently it was a
meeting-place for cats, for she heard miaowing. |
“Jos
Pamin entinen aviomies haluaa toistaa aiemmat esiintymisensä niin minun
tulisi varmaan häätää kissat pois, jottei hän pelästy niitä ja jätä
tulematta.” |
"Certainly if Pam’s
ex-husband wants to repeat his previous performance, I’d better get rid
of those cats so he’s not scared off." |
Daisy avasi vajan oven
varovasti ja heitti sisältä löytämänsä vanhan kengän kohti kissoja,
jotka luikkivat hätäisesti pakoon. |
She opened the shed door
warily and threw an old shoe she had found inside at the cats, who
hastily vanished. |
Nyt kaikki oli taas
hiljaista. |
Now everything was quiet
again. |
Kaksi tuntia myöhemmin
kylmästä ja kosteudesta jäykkä Daisy nousi ylös vanhasta korituolista,
jossa oli istunut. |
Two hours later Daisy, very
stiff from the damp and cold, got up from the ancient wicker chair she
had been sitting on. |
“En
kestä enää kovin pitkään,” hän valitti itsekseen. |
"I can’t stand it much
longer" she moaned to herself. |
Silloin hän luuli kuulevansa
märkien lehtien läpi kahlaavien kumisaappaiden äänen. |
Then she thought she heard
the noise of Wellington boots sloshing through the damp foliage. |
Joku hiipi taloa kohden. |
Someone was creeping towards
the house. |
Daisyn käsiä särki pitkän
liikkumattomuuden vuoksi ja hän melkein pudotti videokameran. |
Daisy’s arms ached because
of the enforced inaction and she nearly dropped the camcorder. |
Hän jätti kenkänsä pois
jaloistaan ja livahti ulos vajan puolillaan auki olevasta ovesta. |
She stepped out of her shoes
and slipped out of the partially-open shed door. |
kirkkaasti: |
At that very moment a car
passed by with its lights fully on and Daisy could see quite clearly: |
Pamin mies vakoili Pamin
makuuhuoneen ikkunasta sisään. |
Pam’s husband was spying
into her bedroom window. |
Daisy onnistui toimimaan
nopeasti ja käynnisti videokameran. |
Daisy managed to act quickly
and turned the camcorder on. |
Vettä satoi enää tihkuttaen. |
It was only drizzling now. |
Pamin mies alkoi huutaa
entiselle vaimolleen ikkunan läpi ja uhkaili häntä. |
Pam’s husband began shouting
through the window at his ex-wife and threatening her. |
Daisy kuvasi näkymän ja
nauhoitti kaikki uhkailevat sanat. |
Daisy was filming the scene
and recording all the menacing words. |
Äkkiä kamerasta kuului outo,
suriseva ääni. |
Suddenly the camcorder made
a strange whirring sound. |
“Ehkä
nauha on jumissa!” Daisy hätääntyi. |
"Maybe the tape’s blocked!"
panicked Daisy. |
She tried to turn it off but
pushed the wrong button and the whirring sound increased. |
Tässä vaiheessa Pamin
entinen mies huomasi äänen ja kääntyi vihaisena ympäri. |
At this point Pam’s
ex-husband became aware of it and turned round furiously. |
Hän tajusi jonkun
tarkkailevan häntä ja kirosi kovaan ääneen. |
He realized someone was
watching him and swore profusely. |
Sitten hän lähi tulemaan
Daisya kohden kuin lyödäkseen häntä. |
Then he made towards Daisy
as though to hit her. |
Daisy’s first thought was to
protect the camcorder with her body, she turned her back on him and
started yelling. |
Hänestä tuntui että hänen
huutonsa kesti iäisyyden. |
It seemed to her that her
yelling lasted an eternity. |
Äkkiä kirkas valokeila osui
heihin kumpaakin. |
Suddenly a strong torch
light shone on both of them. |
“Mitä
täällä tapahtuu?” |
"What’s
going on here?" |
Kysyjä oli hyvin
päättäväisen näköinen naispoliisi. |
It was a police-woman,
looking very determined. |
“Näin,
kuinka kiipesit aidan yli”, poliisi sanoi osoittaen miestä
taskulamppunsa valolla. |
"I saw you climbing over the fence,"
indicating the man with the light of her torch |
Tulkaa ja olkaa hiljaa,
molemmat teistä. |
"Come quietly, both of you. |
Pidätän teidän kotirauhan
rikkomisesta ja…” |
I'm arresting you for
trespassing and ..." |
Just at this moment Pam
appeared at her bedroom window, opened it and looked out. |
“Konstaapeli,
konstaapeli. Tuo mies on täällä luvattomasti ja todellakin rikkoo
kotirauhaa, mutta nainen on ystäväni.” |
"Officer, officer. That man
is certainly trespassing, but the young lady is my friend." |
Pamin entinen mies vietiin
kaakaota. |
Pam’s ex-husband was taken
away as soon as the constable’s colleague appeared and Daisy was invited
inside the cottage to clean up and have a hot cup of cocoa. |
“No,
tässähän kävi hyvä tuuri,” sanoi Daisy. |
"Well, that was a bit of
luck." said Daisy. |
“Saimme
kuvattua hänet katsomassa ikkunastasi sisään yöllä ja poliisikin näki
koko tapauksen. |
"To be able to film him
looking in your window at night and have the whole scene witnessed by
the police. |
En usko että Jimistä on
sinulle enempää vaivaa!” |
I don’t think you’ll be
having any more trouble from Jim!" |
Seuraavana aamuna
yhdentoista aikaan Daisy saapui toimistolleen ja löysi pöydältään
tuoreen kimpun kukkia vaasissa. |
Next morning at about eleven
Daisy arrived in her office to find a fresh bunch of flowers in a vase,
on her desk. |
Niiden vieressä oli pieni
lyijykynällä kirjoitettu viesti: |
Nearby was a little note
written in pencil. |
“Kiitos
Daisy, kiitos vielä uudelleen. Pam. |
"Thanks Daisy, thanks again.
Pam. |
P.S. Laitoin purkillisen
kotitekoista luumuhilloa jääkaappiisi.” |
P.S. I’ve put a pot of
homemade greengage jam in your fridge." |
